Top 5 Tips for Breastfeeding After Birth

Breastfeeding journey is as unique as you. Here, we feature helpful tips, and content to support you through breastfeeding challenges, successes, and everything in between.

1  Breastfeeding as early as possible.

In the delivery room, new mothers should breastfeed newborns as soon - and as often - as possible, because skin-to-skin contact and nursing after delivery will activate the bonding between mother and child, and the hormones that help produce milk will be released instinctively, so the milk supply is established.

2  Let Your Baby Eat a Lot.

Sucking in frequent bursts and pauses is the usual pattern for the first few hours and sometimes even the first few days. The more you breastfeed, the faster your milk will come in, and frequent feeds in the first days will help you make more milk in the months to come. It can feel exhausting to nurse so frequently, but it is worth it: you will have plenty of milk and a thriving baby.

3  Keep Your Baby Awake While Breastfeeding.

Babies are often very sleepy eaters in the first few days. It's so comfortable for them to nuzzle in close to mom and drift off. If baby latches, does a few sucks and falls asleep, she won't be doing her job of drinking colostrum, and your breasts won't be told to make milk. In turn, milk comes in later, baby loses too much weight and may become fussier or sleepier. Rub her head or feet, raise her arm, firmly massage her back, and keep her going!

4  Involve your husband without being overbearing

Husband doesn't understand what your going through and he certainly can’t breastfeed, if that’s your choice.  But he can change diapers, get the baby dressed, and have their snuggle time.  Most importantly, bite your tongue, sit back, and let him figure things out for himself.  He may not do it your way but as long as the baby is safe, that will be okay.

5 Care about yourself.

If things aren't going well in the first few days (your baby has lost 10% of his birth weight, is very sleepy or fussy while feeding, or your nipples are very sore), please do care about yourself at first. You can seek out help from IBCLC or observing another mom breastfeeding first will help greatly if you have the opportunity. In addition, you may also need to prepare some professional breastfeeding underwears, these will make breastfeeding more comfortable and simple.
